Formats
These historical maps are provided in SVG format. SVG (Scalable
Vector Graphics) is a format that is Interactive, Scalable, and
allows Zooming and Panning. An SVG viewer plugin is required (this
is available for free at www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/.).
Interactive Layers
The SVG historical maps have multiple layers that can be turned
on and off at any time. The default shows the countries with their
names. The names can be turned off. Other layers that can be turned
on are natural vegetation, population density, relief, rivers,
and grids. Any combination of layers can be displayed but the
oceans, coastlines, and countries are always visible.

Interactive Popup Information
On the SVG historical maps, clicking on the name of any country
will bring up a popup window with additional information about
the country.
Zooming and Panning
The SVG historical maps allow you to zoom in and out. When
you select an area by holding down the CTRL key and dragging the
mouse, that area zooms in to fill the active window. Once zoomed
in, you can pan (move the map around) to any position.

Colors
All historical maps are 32 bit true color image files. They will
display reasonably well for systems set to 16 bit high color displays,
but they will display poorly on systems with 8 bit, 256 color
settings.
Size
The SVG maps are completely scalable. They will expand or contract
to fill the currently active window.
